Airlie Beach is where almost every tour to Whitehaven Beach starts. The crossing is about 40 km of open water, and there is no road and no public ferry. The distance depends on which end of the beach you want. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service measures both from Shute Harbour, going anticlockwise round Whitsunday Island.
Nobody can drive to Whitehaven Beach, so the boat is the whole trip. On a full day you spend several hours at sea, and the crossing is part of what you pay for.
Coral Sea Marina, on Shingley Drive, is where most boats leave. It has several meeting points, and a crew waiting at one will not see you at another. The Port of Airlie terminal is a short way along the bay, and Shute Harbour is 10 km out of town.

Read the meeting point on your confirmation, not a pin on a map. One operator notes that Coral Sea Marina was once called Abell Point Marina, so an older map may use that name.
Every tour card shows where it meets and whether it collects you, next to the time you get on the sand.
Some boat days collect you, and the rest expect you at the dock. Plan the morning round where you sleep the night before.
Most day tours that collect you make parking unnecessary. If yours meets at the dock and you are staying out of town, allow time to park and walk to your meeting point.
The boat decides how the crossing feels. A raft is fast and wet, and you feel every wave. A big catamaran is slower and steadier, with a cabin to sit in, and it suits you if you are prone to seasickness.

Ocean Rafting's figures for its boats are its own. Every other operator gives no speed at all, so we compare them by how the day runs.
Whitehaven Beach runs for 7 km, and the two ends are different days. At the northern end, boats anchor near Tongue Point, and you walk up to the Hill Inlet lookout. At the southern end there is the day-use area, the Solway circuit and the camping area.
ZigZag walks you to the South Whitehaven lookout instead of Hill Inlet. The half-day catamaran spends up to two hours on the southern end and does not visit Hill Inlet. Ocean Rafting's 6.5-hour day reaches both ends: snorkel sites and the inlet beach in the north, then two hours on the southern sand.
If a windy forecast worries you, choose a large catamaran over a raft. Take a seasickness tablet before you board, not once you feel ill.
You can reach the beach without a tour, but not without a boat. Bareboats and private charters leave from Airlie Beach, Shute Harbour and Hamilton Island. Transfer operators take campers and kayakers across from Coral Sea Marina and the Port of Airlie. Every option needs someone who can skipper the crossing.
