Whitehaven Beach is on Whitsunday Island, and the last part of every trip is by sea or by air. You get yourself to Airlie Beach or Hamilton Island, and a boat, a plane or a helicopter does the rest. If you want the crossing sorted for you, compare the Airlie Beach tours to Whitehaven Beach.
That shapes your whole plan. You drive or fly to the coast, and then you choose how to cross. Most people book a tour boat, because it brings the lunch, the snorkel gear and a crew who knows the tides. The sea route from Shute Harbour is about 40 km, or 21.6 nautical miles, travelling anticlockwise round the island.
The coast road is simple, and every road to the boat ramps suits an ordinary 2WD. Here is the route the park gives:
Arrive the day before your tour. Most boats board between 7:30am and 9am, and a morning drive up the coast leaves you no margin. Check your meeting point before you book a room, so you know whether you walk to the boat or wait for a bus.
The park names two airstrips in the islands. Hamilton Island has one, about 20 km south-east of Shute Harbour, and Airlie Beach has Whitsunday Airport, where the scenic flights and the helicopter take off.
If you are staying on Hamilton Island, your choices shrink. The private charter boards at Hamilton Island Marina, as well as at Coral Sea Marina, Daydream Island and Palm Bay on Long Island. It costs $2,793 per group of up to 8, and you choose the route.
The shared boat days all start on the mainland. Ocean Rafting says its flight and its fly-raft package do not collect from Hamilton Island. The half-day catamaran also calls at Daydream Island, which helps if you are staying there.
Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service says tour operators run day trips, camping tours and camper and kayak transfers from Coral Sea Marina and the Port of Airlie at Airlie Beach, and from Shute Harbour. Bareboats and private charters leave from the same places and from Hamilton Island.

If you bring your own boat, you may anchor off Whitehaven Beach at any tide. The nearest public mooring is at Tongue Bay, by Tongue Point. Public ramps sit at the Port of Airlie and Coral Sea Marina, at Shute Harbour and at Cannonvale, 4 km east of Airlie Beach. Dingo Beach, Conway Beach and Midge Point have ramps too.
A tour boat brings lunch, the snorkel gear and a crew who knows the tides. Compare them by how long you spend on the sand.
You can also see the beach without a boat. The helicopter tour lands on the sand for about 90 minutes, and it is the only product that puts you on the beach by air. The one-hour scenic flight passes over Hill Inlet and Heart Reef and does not land.
The fly-raft package does both: the flight in the morning, then the raft day to the beach. All three leave from Whitsunday Airport, with a courtesy bus from Airlie Beach on the Ocean Rafting fares.
A shorter trip fits a port day better. The half-day catamaran runs for 6 hours 15 minutes, and the scenic flight lasts an hour. Allow for the transfer from the ship to the marina or the airport, too.
